Continuing off from before:
The VENONA Project was so secretive that not even presidents Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman knew about it. But this project was of extreme importance during the beginning of the cold war. Most of the decoders were also female.
The project was initiated in 1943 by the orders of Carter Clarke, deputy Chief of military intelligence. As I've said before this was done because of the fear of a treaty between the Soviet Union (SN) and the 3rd Reich (Nazi Germany).
The messages were highly encrypted so they needed many decoders. After the first code break they found many signs of Soviet espionage. They had set up spies in the US, Canada(!!!), Australia and the UK. Many of the famous spies were Klaus Fuchs, Alan Nunn May and Donald Maclean.
Although it was terminated in 1980, materials about the actual project was not revealed until 1995 when senator Daniel Moynihan, the chairman of the Commission on Government Secrecy decided it was time.
