Actually, bananas do make you taller. It has potassium which supports development of your bones.
However, here are 10 myths about food.
1: Fat free = Less weight.
When a food says "REDUCED FAT" or "Low in fat" people love to eat em. Bad stuff, since most people eat more fat then they wouldve eaten if it was a full fat food. They basically think it's safe to overload.
2: Salads for the win
Usually fast food advertise salads as the healthy option. Actually, a big mac has around 530 calories and 1040 mg of salt.
The southwest salad has 520 calories and 1260 mg of salt. The mac, apparently, is healthier.
3: Protein gives you muscle.
Most people think tons of protein, in addition with working out, gets you muscle. Half true. Working out works, but protein should stay the same. 35% of your intake should be protein.
4: Fresh fruit is best
In fresh vs dried, most would go for the fresh. (Except for vitamin C, then fresh really is the best) Actually, dried fruit has the same nutrients as fresh fruit. Same for canned/frozen fruit.
5: Six mini meals are better than 3 larger meals
If you can keep the portions right, it's fine. However, the six mini meals can easily turn into 6 large meals. If you consume half a meal every mini meal, you're getting the SAME as 3 meals. Nothing better.
6: Celery has negative calories.
The myth is, it takes more calories to chew a celery then the calories it actually has. Let's just say it depends on the person.
7: Decaf has no caffeine
Yeah, it has caffeine. Apparently, it's 97% caffeine free. Although a regular coffee would be better, as much of the taste is lost in decaf and there's 400 other chemicals and the chemical used for decaffeinating coffee beans is also used as a paint stripper.
8: Craving means you need it
Craving usually is believed to mean that your body needs something, such as chocolate. A study was done, and they got a guy with a chocolate craving. He drank a cocktail with all the nutrients from chocolate, and he still wanted more. He was given a chocolate flavored drink with no nutrients from chocolate and his craving stopped (for now).
9: Excess salt increases blood pressure
LIES! All though people with hypertension and high blood pressure should moderate their salt intake, potassium is the key. Eat more potassium, like bananas and broccoli.
10: Fast food is bad
We all know the huge amount of calories and salt in fast food, but eating it in moderation makes it around the same as a home cooked meal. However, mixing it up is the best way to enjoy something tasty once in a while.
This probably won't help you in any subject but family studies, but it's always nice to know.
